Free Screening Saturday Of Film Addressing Hate Violence

The documentary, "Not In Our Town Northern California: When Hate Happens Here," looks at regional communities dealing with deadly hate.

SAN LEANDRO, CA — The community is invited Saturday, Nov. 23 to a free screening of the 60-minute documentary "Not In Our Town Northern California: When Hate Happens Here," followed by a discussion led by Mayor Pauline Russo Cutter in an event that coincides with "United Against Hate Week."

The panel follow-up will include local leaders as they address stopping hate and building an inclusive and equitable community, according to organizers.

The event begins at 2 p.m. at the Main Library, 300 Estudillo Ave. in San Leandro.

"Since being elected as mayor, I am proud of my Community Conversations series that has brought speakers to San Leandro. These speakers have provided thought-provoking discussions on a variety of contemporary topics facing our nation," Cutter said. "This event will provide yet another opportunity to break down barriers and learn from one another's life experiences."

"Not In Our Town Northern California: When Hate Happens Here" takes a regional look at five Northern California communities dealing with deadly hate violence over a five-year period.

"Together, the stories reveal that whether the motivation is racism, anti-Semitism, or crimes motivated by gender or sexual orientation, hate is the same," library officials said. "Californians are finding innovative ways to respond when hate happens in cities."

The film rolls from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., with the panel talk from 3:05 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. and light refreshments from 3:35 p.m. to 4 p.m.

This event is free and open to all San Leandro residents. San Leandro Stands United Against Hate posters and kindness bookmark merchandise will be available to participants.
