Hayward Gets $1M Grant For Homeless Navigation Center
The center will have support services, laundry facilities and one meal per day.
HAYWARD, CA — The city of Hayward has been awarded nearly $1 million in state funding to support operation of its new Housing Navigation Center, a project intended to provide permanent housing for homeless people.
The source of the $999,881 grant is part of $96 million estimated savings on state prison spending in accordance with a 2014 voter initiative that reduced the charges on certain lower-rank crimes from felonies to misdemeanors.
The navigation center is expected to open this fall at Whitesell and Depot roads to accommodate up to 45 people at a time as they transition to long-term housing arrangements. Dorm-style units, support services, bathrooms, laundry facilities and one meal per day are some of the services that will be provided.

The center will be operated by Bay Area Community Services, a nonprofit chosen by the city that also runs STAIR, a successful program that provides services and transitional housing for the homeless in Berkeley and helps their move into permanent housing.
The Hayward City Council authorized the center in January after declaring an emergency homeless shelter crisis in the city, which currently has two permanent homeless shelters, both of which are limited to families and women with children.
