Mystery Donor Offers $10,000 For High School Physics, Challenges Community To Match
Anonymous gift promised to help fund an Advanced Placement Physics class at San Leandro High -- if the community kicks in an equal amount.

An anonymous donor has offered a $10,000 matching donation to support an Advanced Placement (AP) Physics course that San Leandro High School students want to take but the district can't afford to offer.
District Superintendent Cindy Cathey said that in order to get the gift community members must kick in another $10,000 in smaller gifts.

San Leandro High School Principal Linda Granger said the funds raised will go towards purchasing AP Physics instructional materials and lab equipment.
“We have strong student interest in the AP Physics course, which would support a major in science or engineering and make our students more competitive in the college application process," Granger said. "We also know that having options to enter careers with a science foundation is key to being able to thrive in a global economy.”

Members of the community and local businesses that want to help meet the $10,000 challenge should send a donation with "AP Physics" noted on the check to: San Leandro High School, AP Physics Match, 2200 Bancroft Avenue, San Leandro, CA 94579.
School officials say gifts of any size will help and thank donors in advance for their support.
Meanwhile, officials are thrilled and hopeful.
“We are very grateful to this generous donor who wishes to remain anonymous,” Cathey said.
