The intended victims' car was riddled with bullet holes. One man has been arrested.

Update:

A man has been arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon for allegedly shooting at two men while they were in a car near the San Leandro Police Department this afternoon, police said.

Lt. Robert McManus said police received more than a dozen 911 calls, including calls from the two victims, after the suspect, an Oakland man whose name isn’t yet being released, allegedly fired shots at the two men at about 12:25 p.m. while they were in a car in the 100 block of Haas Avenue, which is less than a block from police headquarters and includes several apartment complexes and an assisted living facility.

Officers who responded to the shooting were directed by witnesses to search nearby San Leandro Creek because they saw the suspect run toward that area, according to McManus.

After searching the creek area, which was full of water due to the recent rains, officers spotted the suspect hiding behind some homes adjacent to the creek and watched him as he began to alter his appearance by removing some of the layers of his clothing, McManus said.

Officers ordered the man to come out of the creek area and he complied and was taken into custody without incident, McManus said.

Police believe the suspect used a semi-automatic pistol in the shooting but it hasn’t yet been recovered, according to McManus.

Detectives, who are being assisted by a canine team from the Alameda County sheriff’s department, are searching the area to try to find the discarded firearm, he said.

The two intended victims have been cooperative with police and detectives are interviewing them now to get more information before they interview the suspect later this evening, McManus said.

Police also are examining the victims’ car, which has several bullet holes in it, he said Police believe the shooting may have been part of an attempted robbery but that hasn’t been confirmed at this point, McManus said.

The suspect is expected to be charged and appear in court later this week, he said. Anyone who has information about the shooting should call the San Leandro Police Department’s criminal investigation unit at (510) 577-3230.
