Play Based On 'Little Mermaid' In Last Weekend

Saturday evening and Sunday matinee showings of "Once On This Island," performed by the Bancroft Middle School.

 

Saturday at 8 pm and Sunday at 2 pm will be the last two showing of "Once On This Island" a theatrical adaptation of the popular fairy tale, The Little Mermaid.

The show garnered eight Tony nominations for its Broadway run. The local show brings Broadway to our own backyard, courtesy of student actors from Bancroft Middle School.

In almost non-stop song and dance, "Once On This Island" tells the story of Ti Moune, a peasant girl who rescues and falls in love with Daniel, a wealthy boy from the other side of her island.

When Daniel is returned to his people, the fantastical gods who rule the island guide Ti Moune on a quest to test the strength of her love against the powerful forces of prejudice, hatred and death

Director Andrea Gorham staged the student performance. The lighting is designed by Andrea Schwartz. One among many moving numbers, “Rain,”  was choreographed by Catherine Williamson.

The show May 18-May 20 at the San Leandro Arts Education Center, 2200 Bancroft Ave, San Leandro, CA 94577.
