Amtrak Accident: Mother, 3-Year-Old Girl Killed in San Leandro Train Crossing Tragedy

This brings to 4 the number of people killed by Amtrak trains in the East Bay in the past week. The other 2 were pedestrians.

SAN LEANDRO, CA - A woman and child were killed Tuesday afternoon when a Capital Corridor train slammed into their SUV at a crossing in San Leandro, Amtrak confirms. The child was believed to be three years old. Tragically, the SUV was stuck behind traffic on the railroad tracks when the crossing bar came down and the flashing lights went on.

The SUV was pushed about a quarter of a mile down the tracks before the train came to a stop.

None of the passengers or crew aboard the train were injured. The passengers were later transferred by bus to the nearest train station to catch the next train. Train service through the area was disrupted for several hours.

The maximum speed limit for trains through that stretch of track is 79 miles per hour, although the exact speed the train was travelling when it hit the SUV has not been reported.

It's been a rough week for trains in the East Bay - within the past seven days, two pedestrians have been killed by Capital Corridor trains including in San Leandro on Monday.
