Where To Recycle Holiday Lights For Free In San Leandro

Residents are asked not to toss them in the trash, as they can take 1,000 years to break down in a landfill, officials said.

SAN LEANDRO, CA – San Leandro residents have the opportunity until the second week of January to drop off working and non-working holiday lights for recycling, city officials said.

It's the third annual event and lasts until Jan. 11 at the Public Works Service Center at 14200 Chapman Road.

Residents can drop off lights for free at that location from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday to Friday. The event is only for San Leandro residents.

City officials said the time it takes for holiday lights to break down in a landfill is up to 1,000 years. Any lengths of lights and any colors will be accepted for recycling.

City officials said the lights can be placed in collection bins in the lobby of the Public Works Service Center. Strings of lights must be free of bags, binding and packaging.

Extension cords, pre-lit trees, wreaths, garland and compact fluorescent lights are not being accepted.
