San Marino No Match for Dana Hills

The girls’ tennis team faced its toughest test so far Wednesday afternoon when the top-ranked team in the CIF Southern Section Division 2 poll entertained visiting Dana Hills, ranked second in Division 1.

The Dolphins proved to be too tough, winning 14-4 in the nonleague contest.

“I thought it would be a little tighter,” San Marino coach John Christopher said. “It was a good learning experience.”

Dana Hills (2-1) was coming off of a loss to Peninsula of Rolling Hills Estates a day earlier.

San Marino (4-1) had yet to face team of Dana Hills’ caliber, especially in doubles where the Dolphins won eight of nine sets.

San Marino No. 1 singles player Dorothy Tang lost 3-6, 3-6 and won 6-0, playing against Dana Hills’ singles group of Alyssa Smith, Jessica Perez and Katie Olson.

Titans No. 2 player Sarah Gealer went 3-6, 3-6, 6-2 and No. 3 player Vivian Le went 3-6 against Margo Pletcher, who subbed in for Smith. Le went 0-6 against Perez and 6-3 over Olson.

In doubles, San Marino’s No. 1 team of Larissa Phillips and Crystal Yang lost 6-7(7-3) to the No. 1 team of Rebecca Gold and Sabine Ludwig, 6-4 to the No. 2 team of Cassidy Spearman and A.J. Gomer and 2-6 to the No. 3 team of Jacqueline Stewart and Jessica Wilcox.

San Marino’s No. 2 doubles team of sister Monique and Michelle Gandawidjaja went 2-6, 1-6, 1-6.

The No. 3 team of Robin Fong and Lauren Chang fell 1-6 to Spearman and Gomer and 1-6 to Stewart and Wilcox. Fong played with Andrea Klein in a 6-3 loss to Gold and Ludwig.
