Two Students Barred from SMHS Pending Tdap Vaccine Proof

Two SMUSD students had not yet submitted proof of the state mandated Tdap vaccine or a waiver as of Wednesday afternoon, following Monday's deadline, and are not permitted to attend school until proof or a waiver is provided.

After , those not in compliance were not allowed to attend school until proof was given.

Superintendent Loren Kleinrock told Patch Wednesday afternoon that four students—all from —missed school Tuesday since they did not submit proof or a waiver. As of Wednesday afternoon, that number was down to two.

“We know they’ve been notified,” said Kleinrock.

Vaccine paperwork for all seventh and eighth graders was submitted by Monday’s deadline. 

Kleinrock was surprised Wednesday that the number of non-compliant students was not higher.

“As of Friday we were looking at about 140 [non-compliant] kids so I did not think we’d see this kind of closure,” said Kleinrock. “Fortunately we continued with phone calls and letters to parents.”

Of the 1,637 7th to 12th grade students in the SMUSD, 46 submitted waivers saying they chose to not get the vaccine and would be required by law to miss school in the event of a whooping cough outbreak.
