Attempted Bank Robbery Thwarted In SMC: Police

Deputies said the suspect claimed he had a gun and demanded cash from a teller.

SAN CARLOS, CA — A Millbrae man was arrested Tuesday after attempting to rob a bank in San Carlos, the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office said.

Around 12:30 p.m., San Mateo County Sheriff's deputies were notified of a panic alarm at a bank on the 700 block of El Camino Real.

Deputies said they arrived within minutes and found a man, identified as Gilberto M. Mirandaorozco, 45, of Millbrae, at the teller counter who appeared agitated, along with a teller who appeared fearful for her safety, the sheriff's office said.

Deputies said they detained Mirandaorozco and learned the he had told the teller he had a gun and demanded $5,000 in cash, according to the sheriff's office. No firearm was located.

Mirandaorozco was booked into the Maguire Correctional Facility on suspicion of attempted robbery, police said.

The case will be forwarded to the Federal Bureau of Investigation for consideration of federal charges, officials said.
