EARTH DAY@SHOREWAY

RethinkWaste, in collaboration with Recology San Mateo
County and South Bay Recycling, will host “Earth Day@Shoreway” on Saturday, April 21st, from 9 am to 12 pm at the Shoreway Environmental Center, 333 Shoreway Road, San Carlos. The free event will feature a compost giveaway, tours of the facility, an opportunity to see a Recology truck up close in action, and giveaways, among others.

Those with a creative side are also encouraged to enter the “Rethink Your Bucket” contest. Participants can show off their artistic talents by decorating a bucket or container, or coming up with a unique item to use for getting some of the compost – all in an effort to get people thinking about reusing what they already have. Prizes include an iPod nano and gift cards. Entries will be posted on the RethinkWaste Facebook page and website, and the top entries will also be featured in a future issue of the “rethinker” newsletter.

The free compost is for residents only, no commercial customers, while supplies last. Paper bags will also be provided to those who do not bring their own containers to fill up with the nutrient rich material. RethinkWaste will provide shovels for attendees to use to fill their containers or bags with compost.

Earth Day@Shoreway is also a kick off for RethinkWaste’s ongoing compost giveaway at Shoreway. Following the event, residents of the RethinkWaste service area will be able to pick up free compost at Shoreway any time they need it. They will be provided with up to two empty paper bags at the scale house per visit for the compost. Residents will then be directed to the Shoreway Transfer Station where they can fill up the bags with compost. Shovels will be provided for residents to use. Residents will need to show a utility bill or identification card as proof of residency. Like the Earth Day giveaway, the free compost is for residents only, no commercial customers.

The finished compost comes from either Newby Island or the Grover Recology composting facilities where all of the residential and commercial yard trimmings and food scraps that are collected by Recology in the RethinkWaste service area are processed under contract with RethinkWaste.
