Local Burger Joints - Where to Get Your Fix

Check out these great places to grab a burger in San Mateo and what to order when you get there.

No summer barbecue is complete without a hearty hamburger. So why not skip the grill clean-up, grab a friend and head over to these local haunts? Patch rounded up the best places to grab a burger in town.

See which San Mateo restaurants made the cut:

Jeffrey's Hamburgers

What to order: Cheeseburger ($5.59)

A traditional all-American cheeseburger. From its no-nonsense traditional Angus-ground patty, cheddar cheese and classic white bun to the restaurant's retro facade, this burger takes you back.

Like a 1950s soda fountain, Jeffrey's Hamburgers is a great place to take the kids — or the kid in you — for a bite.

(Those who want to inject a little modern influence can turn any hamburger into a Garden burger or turkey burger.)

Don't forget: An order of garlic fries ($2.69) and a vanilla milkshake ($3.99). Do be warned, these garlic fries are not for the faint of heart (grabbing a mint on your way out the door wouldn't hurt either).

Rave Burger

What to order: The Rave Burger ($9.45)

What is The Rave Burger? An all-natural Niman Ranch beef patty topped with two slices of crisp bacon, fresh grilled jalapeños, sauteed onions and a mound of deep-fried onion strings — all atop a french roll. If you like to dial up the heat, The Rave Burger is served with chipotle aioli sauce.

Surprisingly, jalapeños don't give this one too much added heat. And though the mound of deep-fried onion strings are a bit hard to navigate at first bite, they give this burger unexpected texture. This is certainly not a boring, run-of-the-mill bacon burger.

Rave Burger has beer on tap, a six-varietal wine list and a short four stool bar. Complete with two flat screens, this would make a great lunch stop or game day go-to.

Don't forget: An order of sweet potato fries ($2.95). These are crisp and sweet; not extraordinary but all you would expect from a sweet potato fry.

Jack's Prime

What to order: Whiskey Burger

One-third pound of all-natural Niman Ranch beef patty topped with cheddar and whiskey-sauteed mushrooms on a classic white burger bun.

The burger concept is simple, but the flavors are anything but. Whiskey and mushrooms. It just works.

Jack's Prime has a covered outdoor patio that is perfect for a warm summer day. This burger joint could easily be a place for wine and burgers with an intimate group of friends.

Don't forget: The deep-fried pickles, which are cooked in a beer batter and served with Russian dressing. These pickles are perfectly tangy and crisp.  And for those who wish to skip the meat, Jack's makes an in-house vegetarian burger patty using black beans and cilantro that's worth a try.
