Man Found Guilty In 2016 Gang-Related Murder In San Mateo

Another defendant was aquitted of murder, but found guilty for felony evading as the two led police on a pursuit after the shooting.

SAN MATEO, CA — After a 30-day trial, jurors on Wednesday found one man guilty of second-degree murder and another not guilty of murder in a gang-related shooting and vehicle pursuit in 2016, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney's office.

On Sept. 6, 2016, Alejandro Deleon, 22, of San Leandro, and Louis Mercado, 20, of Hayward, confronted Daniel Corona in the 3500 block of South El Camino Real in San Mateo.

Prosecutors say Deleon pulled out a semi-automatic handgun and fatally shot Corona. The two, with Mercado driving, then led San Mateo police on a high-speed chase into San Francisco where the defendants were stopped and arrested.

They also threw several items out of the car during the chase, including the gun, which police later recovered, prosecutors said.

The jury found Deleon guilty of second-degree murder with firearm use and felony possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was found not guilty of one count of felony shooting from a vehicle. He faces a sentence of up to 43 years to life.

Mercado was found guilty on one count of felony evading. He was found not guilty of murder and felony shooting from a vehicle. His case has been continued because of other pending felony cases, prosecutors said.

The defendants remain in custody on no bail status.
