SAN MATEO, CA — Seven more San Mateo County residents have died from the new coronavirus, which takes the country-wide death toll to 48, local health officials announced on Tuesday. The seven new deaths represent the single-largest daily increase since 11 were reported on April 22.
There are now 1,099 confirmed cases in the county, including 19 new cases which were announced Tuesday. The largest number of people (191) who have been diagnosed falling between the ages of 40-49 followed by 30-39 (185). Of the 48 deaths, 26 have been males and the greatest number of deaths have involved people 90 years of age and older.
Tuesday’s report from local health officials comes just a day after officials in six counties – including San Mateo County – announced they would extend Shelter In Place orders through May. The current order was to expire on May 3, but county executives agreed that they needed to see a decline in positive cases and deaths as well as an increase in deaths before they would consider lifting the order.
