San Mateo Firefighters Get Spicy for Good Cause
Neighborhood real estate community Bay Meadows hosts fun-raiser for fire safety with Red Hot Roundup
As California faces another fire season amid an historic drought, hundreds of people from throughout the Bay Area will gather this weekend to raise funds, have fun and raise awareness for fire safety and prevention.
On Sat Sep 17th, Bay Meadows is hosting “Red Hot Roundup,” a spicy food truck party with entertainment, specialty vendors, DJ, roller-skating and a Spicy Wings eating contest. Sponsored by “Your Neighborhood Real Estate Experts, Louie and Mary Ann,” a portion of proceeds will benefit the Alisa Ann Ruch Burn Foundation (AARBF), a charity championed by the San Mateo Fire Department.
AARBF is a California nonprofit dedicated to preventing burns and fires and providing services to those who have been affected by a burn injury.
Joey was just 8 years old and living in Lake County when he barely survived the fiery car crash in which he lost his mom. His journey from burn victim to survivor was a long road, including months in the hospital, 18 surgeries and years of traumatic physical and emotional effects. AARBF played a pivotal role in Joey’s recovery and in the recovery of hundreds of California kids and adults.
Twenty one years after first being helped by AARBF, Joey now gives back – through volunteering as a counselor at AARBF’s “Champ Camp” in the Sierras. Over 140 kids attend the camp each year - only one of the many services the Burn Foundation provides to pursue its mission.
While Saturday’s event will feature fire safety info, education and even a vintage fire truck for little ones to play on, it’s mostly a fun food truck picnic and play-day for all ages. A brave few who dare can take on the San Mateo Fire Department in the Spicy Wings Eating competition.
