Mills Health Center Closing San Mateo Emergency Room

The emergency room at Mills Health Center in San Mateo will close in December to meet statewide earthquake standards, according to a recent article in the San Mateo Daily Journal.

The standby emergency department, which will close Dec. 1, will be replaced with an urgent care center in the same space, scheduled to open in late 2013.

Hospital officials say it would cost between $60 million and $80 million to retrofit the one affected building at Mills, which reportedly is “simply not feasible.”

With its closure, emergency and urgent care services will be provided at the emergency department at Mills-Peninsula Medical Center in Burlingame, a Sutter Health affiliate, which has expanded capacity since the new hospital opened last year and is just four miles from the San Mateo ER.
