3 Marin Firefighters Injured In Carr Fire Near Redding

Scott Pederson, 37, Tyler Barnes, 34, and Brian Cardoza, 26, suffered burns to their ears, face and hands, officials said.

MARIN COUNTY, CA – Three firefighters from Marin County were injured while battling the deadly and destructive Carr Fire in Northern California.

The firefighters, all from the Marin County Fire Department, were injured when they were overcome by a sudden blast of heat while fighting the flames in Shasta County, according to department officials.

Fire engineer Scott Pederson, 37, firefighter Tyler Barnes, 34, and firefighter Brian Cardoza, 26, suffered burns to their ears, face and hands, according to the Marin County Fire Department. They were treated at Mercy Hospital in Redding. Two of the injured firefighters were released from the hospital, while the third firefighter was transferred to UC Davis Burn Center for further evaluation.

"At this time we are focusing on the health of our firefighters' and ensuring peer support is in place for the members of the strike team," Marin County Fire Chief Jason Weber said in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the two firefighters that lost their lives yesterday battling the same fire."

A bulldozer operator and a firefighter were killed in the Carr Fire, which has scorched 44,450 acres and was 3 percent contained as of Friday morning, according to Cal Fire. An unknown number of civilians have also been injured in the fire. The blaze has destroyed at least 15 structures and damaged five others.
