34 Citations Issued In Bicycle And Pedestrian Safety Operation In Marin County

Police said they set up the operation at three separate locations in the city.

SAN RAFAEL, CA — The San Rafael Police Department issued 34 citations to drivers during a bicycle and pedestrian safety enforcement operation on Friday.

Police said the operation targeted dangerous driving behaviors that put vulnerable road users at risk. Violations included failing to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, unsafe speed in and around crosswalks, and using a handheld cellular device while driving.

The SRPD traffic unit conducted the operation between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. at there locations: Mission Street and Nye Street, Fifth Avenue at Lootens Place, and Fourth Street at Shaver Street. In total, 34 motorists were stopped and cited.

“Safety is a shared responsibility, with drivers holding the greatest responsibility to keep other road users safe,” said Sergeant Michael Mathis. “We hope this operation serves as a reminder to everyone to practice due care and to look out for one another.”

Mathis said that the SRPD and its traffic unit are committed to both educating the community about safe driving and enforcing dangerous driving behavior.

“Please be aware and mindful of pedestrians and bicyclists,” Mathis said.

The SRPD plans to conduct another bicycle and pedestrian safety operation later in 2026, with the date to be determined.

The program was made possible by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
