Man Randomly Attacked With Shovel In San Rafael, Suspect Arrested: Police

SAN RAFAEL, CA — A man was hospitalized Tuesday after police said he was attacked with a shovel in San Rafael.

Melvin Enrique Delgado Pacheco, 43, of San Rafael, was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and violating the terms of his probation. He was booked into the Marin County Jail, where he is being held without bail.

The assault happened around 7 p.m. on Irwin Street, according to San Rafael police Sgt. Justin Graham.

Although the two men knew each other, investigators determined there was no argument or physical altercation before the assault and that it was "random."

The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Officers detained Delgado Pacheco a short distance away and recovered the shovel believed to have been used in the attack.

The investigation is ongoing.
