Tuesday Tech Tip: 3 Common Email Mistakes to Avoid

Email is an important tool for many of us - but I find many colleagues falling into common mistakes that they can easily correct.

I am delighted to be here with you on the Patch.

I plan on sharing technology tips you can use, in plain language you can understand every Tuesday in this column.

Today's Topic: Common Email Mistakes To Avoid.  Actually I did a recent podcast with 30 minutes of discussion on this topic, so let me pick just 3 top issues for today that I see a lot of folks doing still.

  • Don't Send Financial Info. A lot of people are surprised to learn that email is not a secure form of communication.  Cyber thiefs can intercept your email - do not put credit card numbers in an email.
  • If you're sending an email to a group of people, put their email addresses in the BCC field (unless they're a work group). Don't expose people's contact info to others unless they have agreed to it.  For example - avoid sending that cute picture, joke, or store with everybody in your email list (unless you do so with the Blind Copy function).
  • Don't Email while angry. Email should not replace sensitive conversation in person or on the phone.  An email can easily be misread or misunderstood.

You can listen to my complete 30-minute program titled 'Common Email Mistakes' on Episode 7 of the Your Technology Tutor podcast.
