What do they offer?

Gourmet chefs and good food lovers looking for unique and hard to find Mediterranean and Middle Eastern teas, breads, sweets and gifts should look no further than Jasmine Market, a small but stocked-to-the-brim shop set slightly back from the hustle and bustle of Montecito Plaza on Third Street in downtown San Rafael. This is the perfect spot for the slow food and "foodies" to broaden their horizons in ethnic cuisines and ingredients. The helpful and friendly faces at the counter are delighted to show customers exactly what their store has to offer.  Items found at Jasmine Market include kosher foods, tamarind paste, rose water, grapeseed oil and even frozen okra.

Who are they?

Husband and wife business owners Parviz and Fatima Sohi hail from Iran. In 2000, upon moving to Marin, they opened Cafe Papillion, an all-American and Persian Cafe, in the very same shopping complex where Jasmine Market currently operates. Although the cafe was shuttered four years ago, Jasmine Market has thrived, and even recently, begun serving sandwiches during the lunch hour. The Sohis love San Rafael, and love being a part of such a beautiful community.

How long have they been there?

Jasmine Market has been open to the residents of San Rafael for eight years and hope to remain for many years to come.

Why are they in our Business Spotlight?

Owner Parviz Sohi is proud of his grocery’s selection. “It’s a specialty shop. We search hard to find ingredients such as pomegranate paste, and Persian herbs and spices. We have lavashak, our tea selection is one of the best in town and our fresh Persian vegetables are delivered weekly,” he said.

The market also offers catering of the highest quality. While many of the dishes are Middle Eastern/Mediterranean in origin, the cooking is contemporary and incorporates flavors from all over the world with fresh local farm produce.

"Our lamb, beef, chicken and vegetarian specialties are guaranteed to satisfy even the fussiest gourmet," Parviz said.

This family owned business is also a large supporter of San Rafael schools, in particular . The students support businesses such as Jasmine Market and the Sohis feel it is important to give back in return.
