Dominican University's Osher Lifelong Learning Institute is a membership-driven program designed to provide intellectually stimulating opportunities for adults in our community who are 50 years or older. The OLLI Institute brings an exciting variety of courses from topics such as film, art history, politics, and literature to its summer session, one of which is the Tradition and Politics in South East Asia course, beginning on September 13, 2010.
Focussing specifically on the countries of Burma, Cambodia and Vietnam, this course will look at the intersection of policy and heritage in the region. One of the world's trading crossroads, South East Asia has seen the rise and fall of mighty kingdoms whose temples inspire awe even today. How these areas reacted to the impact of the European intrusions in the 19th and 20th Centuries and how their traditions and history resulted in their 21st Century dilemmas will be the theme of these talks. Lecturer Gloria Neumeier spent time in South East Asia this winter, visiting, Cambodia , Vietnam and traveling down the Mekong River by boat. She will share her experiences throughout the course.
