Fire Causes $50K In Damage At Dixie School In San Rafael

Firefighters quickly extinguished​ a roof fire Monday evening at Dixie Elementary​ School​ in the Lucas Valley-Marinwood area of San Rafael.

SAN RAFAEL, CA – Firefighters quickly extinguished a roof fire Monday evening at Dixie Elementary School in San Rafael's Lucas Valley-Marinwood area, according to authorities. The roof of a building that contains classrooms and offices was under repair when the fire broke out around 6 p.m., San Rafael Fire Chief Chris Gray said.

Some construction workers were still at the site when the fire sparked on the roof. Propane torches, roofing paper and tar were on the roof at the time, and investigators believe one of them caught fire, according
to Gray.

Personnel from the Marinwood Fire Department, Novato Fire Department, San Rafael Fire Department and Marin County Sheriff's Office responded to the elementary school. Firefighters called a second alarm as a precaution but they kept the flames from the interior of the building, Gray said.

The fire was extinguished within 15 minutes. Damage is estimated at $50,000, Gray said.

The K-5 school is located in the Lucas Valley-Marinwood area of unincorporated Marin County, but its address is 1175 Idylberry Road in San Rafael. The first day of school is Aug. 24.
