Junior Accessory Dwelling Unit Expo Coming Up

Marin County residents can learn about requirements for converting a bedroom/bathroom to a legal rental.

SAN RAFAEL, CA – Marin County residents can learn more about junior dwelling accessory units at an expo Thursday morning at Whistlestop's Jackson Cafe in San Rafael.

The housing units, known as JADUs, are room rentals within an existing residence that usually have a small food preparation area and a separate entrance and exit.

The units provide homeowners, including seniors on fixed incomes, an income source that helps them remain in their homes and also creates affordable housing.

In December, Marin County extended and expanded a fee waiver program that encourages the creation of JADUs and accessory dwelling units, ADUs, that have full kitchens. Homeowners may save $1,500 in fees by adding a JADU or $3,500 in fees for adding an ADU.

The expo is co-hosted by Marin County's Aging Action Initiative and the county's Commission on Aging. The expo is 9-11 a.m. at Whistlestop, 930 Tamalpais Ave. between Third and Fourth streets.
