Officials Meet With PG&E on Pipelines

Lines run from San Rafael Corporate Center to Woodland Avenue.

About a dozen San Rafael officials met with Pacific Gas and Electric Co. representatives Monday and learned more details about gas pipelines within the city.

City Manager Ken Nordhoff told the city council Monday night that lines run from Canada through Napa and Sonoma counties, going along Highway 101 in San Rafael and in several other locations, including Lindaro Street from the San Rafael Corporate Center to Woodland Avenue.

That 10-inch line was installed in 1945 and the utility is conducting engineering studies on it but has assured officials there are no problems with it.

Nordhoff said assessments will continue and if any are found to have hazardous conditions, they will be repaired according to company and state Public Utilities Commission standards.

Most are covered by five-feet of  soil but some are exposed above ground, Nordhoff said.

Mayor Al Boro asked if drills could be conducted between PG&E and city safety workers. Nordhoff said the city is working on coordinating safety efforts with the utility.
