Refinery Fire Closes I-80, Impacts Streets In San Rafael

SAN RAFAEL, CA — A fire burning in the East Bay forced the closure of Interstate Highway 80 Tuesday and impacted streets in San Rafael, police said.

A fire sparked at the NuStar storage facility in Contra Costa County, which is adjacent to the "Phillips 66 Refinery in Rodeo," according to County Supervisor John Gioia. The CHP shut down I-80 in both directions due to the blaze.

The closure "extremely impacted" surface streets in San Rafael, police said. Authorities advised motorists to avoid blocking intersections and avoid gridlock.
