PHOTOS: San Rafael Man Sentenced for Spray-Painting Chicken Character on Downtown Properties

SAN RAFAEL, CA – A San Rafael man who spray-painted a chicken character on downtown San Rafael properties was sentenced to nine months in the Marin County Jail Friday, a sergeant with the San Rafael Police Department said.

Over the past three months, a chicken character has been spray-painted on city and private property in downtown Rafael. San Rafael Police Sgt. Scott Eberle said there have been 11 documented vandalism incidents that featured the chicken character.

An investigation by the department's Special Operations Unit that deals with downtown issues identified Joshua David Edelstein, 41, as a suspect.

Edelstein was seen on Nov. 29 riding a bicycle through Albert Park with a spray paint can and paint on his clothes, Eberle said. When police arrested Edelstein for vandalism and drug offenses, Eberle said they found him with more spray paint cans and narcotics paraphernalia.

Edelstein pled guilty to four counts of possession of a controlled substance, four counts of possession of drug paraphernalia, two counts of disorderly conduct and one count of possession of vandalism tools. After refusing probation, he was sentenced to nine months in the Marin County Jail.
