San Rafael Snapshot - August 1, 2013

National Night Out

Tuesday, August 6th from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m., people all over the United States will observe the 30th annual National Night Out.  Residents are encouraged to get out of their houses, meet other neighbors in the area and get to know them.  Chief Bishop and members of SRPD, along with San Rafael Fire Department and City Council members will be stopping by the various events that have been organized throughout the city.  This is a night to send a powerful message about neighborhood unity, awareness, safety and police-community partnerships. Participating neighborhood groups include Contempo Homeowners, Terra Linda Homeowners, West End Neighborhood, Marin Ventures, Bret Harte Neighborhood, Gerstle Park Neighborhood, Dominican Black Canyon Neighborhood, and Villa Real.

Sales Tax Update

On Monday night the City Council will hear two items related to the November sales tax ballot measure. One is a resolution authorizing final ballot language and the other requests the City Attorney to prepare an impartial analysis of the measure. Click here to read more on both actions.

Coffee with the Chief

Please join Chief of Police Diana Bishop and members of her staff for a cup of coffee on Wednesday, August 14 from 8:30-10 a.m. at Odalisque Café, 1335 Fourth Street.  “Coffee with the Chief” offers an opportunity for informal, friendly conversation between police department representatives and community members to answer questions, offer tips, and share information.  Coffee will be provided.

San Rafael Target is Hiring!

Target San Rafael is hosting a “Mass Hire” event at College of Marin on August 7, 8, 9, and 10 from 9 – 4 p.m. Apply online at www.target.com/careers (select the San Rafael location) to be contacted by a recruiter who will schedule your interview. Smoking Ordinance Training Workshop for Landlords and Property Managers

On August 14 there will be a training workshop for landlords and property managers on how to enforce the new smoking ordinance. The new ordinance prohibits smoking in all duplex and multi-family residential units that share a common wall in San Rafael. The ordinance applies to all new and existing properties and goes into effect on November 14. The workshop will be from 2 – 4 p.m. at 3240 Kerner Boulevard in room 109. Marin Transit Service Changes

On August 4, Marin Transit will be making a variety of improvements to local bus service throughout San Rafael and the rest of the County, including expanding existing Community Shuttle routes to provide more direct connections between San Rafael and Novato; providing service to the new San Rafael Target store upon its opening this Fall; and providing more frequent and later evening service on select routes. Save the Date: K9 Swearing In

After an 11 year hiatus, the San Rafael Police Department is reinstating their K9 program. On August 19 at 7 p.m., the City Council will have a special swearing in ceremony for the department’s two newest members, Ares and Faro. Come join us in welcoming the new recruits!

Latin Flavors on Fourth Street

This month Second Friday Art Walk has a Latin theme. Featuring live music in the Plaza with salsa lessons, live music along Fourth Street and the West End Village, Latin food specialty and sidewalk tastings, and stores open until 9 p.m. Come down to Fourth Street on August 9 from 5:30 – 9 p.m. and enjoy dancing, happy hour and dinner specials, sidewalk sales, and art. San Rafael Food & Wine Festival

San Rafael's Food & Wine Festival will feature wine tasting from regional wineries, beer tasting from local breweries, and local restaurants serving up some of the best cuisine in Marin County. The Festival will also showcase local artists and musicians. Admission to the event is free, with tasting programs ranging from $15 - $25. Great Operatic Creations of Giuseppe Verdi: Celebrating his 200th Birthday Year

In this celebration of Verdi’s 200th birthday, Gil “The Opera Guy” Deane will be discussing the significance of Verdi’s works featuring selected recordings, photos, and video clips. He will speak at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, August 7, in the City Council Chambers. Jealousy, kidnapping, seduction, murder, mistaken identity - Italian Romantic composer, Giuseppe Verdi’s twenty-eight opera plots seem to be torn from today’s news. Beautification Day at Munson Park
