SAN RAFAEL, CA — The San Rafael Police Department commended a security guard Wednesday for his "swift and brave action" that stopped a violent carjacking earlier this week.

The victim had just parked his car and stepped out of it at the Montecito Plaza Shopping Center around 4:45 p.m. Monday when an assailant approached him, demanded his keys and began to punch and strike him, police said.

The man attempted to push the suspect away during the assault, but the suspect continued his attack, demanding the keys and attempting to get into the car.

A security guard at the Redwood Credit Union in the shopping center intervened and separated the victim from the suspect, causing the suspect to attempt to run away, police said. The suspect tripped and fell, allowing the security guard to catch up to him. A tussle ensued but the security guard managed to get the suspect into handcuffs.

San Rafael Police in the area then took the suspect into custody. He was identified as Edward Ganny Carroll, 41, from San Rafael.

Police said they have evidence from surveillance footage that allegedly links Carroll to the carjacking and assault.

The victim suffered minor injuries to his head and face but did not need to go to a hospital, police said. The security guard was not injured.

Police said Carroll has an "extensive criminal history" and he was booked into Marin County Jail on suspicion of felony attempted carjacking and robbery. He is being held on $150,000 bail and his case has been forwarded to the Marin County District Attorney's Office, which has filed charges, police said.
