Video: Police Seek Suspects In San Rafael ATM Heist

Watch: Police have released the surveillance footage of the ATM theft.

SAN RAFAEL, CA – A San Rafael building sustained major damage early Monday morning after suspects broke into it and forcibly removed an ATM inside by attaching a rope to it and then pulling it out with their car, according to police.

At 2:22 a.m., officers responded to a report of a burglary alarm going off at the Marin Airporter shuttle service, located at 1081 Andersen Drive, police said.

Upon arrival, officers found that a ramp and metal stairs leading into the building had been ripped away from the building. Additionally, the building's main front doors were damaged, as well as furniture in the lobby area.

Officers also noticed that an independently owned and operated ATM inside was missing, according to police.

Surveillance video showed that the incident began when a newer model white SUV entered the parking lot and backed up to the building's front doors.

A man then exited from the passenger side of the vehicle and forced his way into the building. The suspect attached a rope or cable to the ATM before running back into the waiting SUV, police said.

The vehicle then drove forward, yanking the machine from its place, in addition to damaging the stairs, ramp and front doors.

The SUV then backed up to the ATM, which had been pulled into the parking lot, and one of the suspects then loaded the machine into the back of the vehicle, according to police.

Hours later, at about 11:30 a.m., officers learned the ATM had been located in Richmond.

The suspect seen in the surveillance video was described as a man wearing a tan hooded sweatshirt and blue latex gloves, police said.

Police believe he is the same suspect who was seen on Sunday during a suspicious incident in which two male suspects were seen inside a similar newer model white SUV, described as a Lexus, entering a parking lot at 1221 Andersen Drive.

The suspects were then seen tampering with a trailer before leaving the area empty handed, according to police.

Police have released the surveillance footage of the ATM theft.
