12/10 Update:

On December 9, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration authorized booster shots of the Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus vaccine for 16- and 17-year-olds, six
months after they received their second shot of that vaccine.

While people ages 18+ can mix-and-match vaccines for their boosters,
teens ages 16-17 will only be able to get Pfizer for their boosters. The
Moderna and J&J vaccines are only approved for people ages 18 and
older.

Contra Costa County Health Officials Encourage COVID-19
Booster Shots for Adults and Vaccines for Kids Ages 5-11 as Holidays
Approach

With the holidays and winter approaching, county health officials are
urging everyone to get a COVID-19 vaccine or a booster shot to ensure
safe celebrations.

Following guidance
from the state health officer, Contra Costa County has announced that
it will provide boosters to anyone ages 18+ who feels they are at increased risk from
COVID-19 and wants one. According to Contra Costa Health Services,
there is increasing evidence that the effectiveness of the vaccines wane
over time and boosters provide additional protection.

For those who originally received Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, at
least six months must have passed since their last dose. Those who got a
Johnson & Johnson vaccine must wait two months to get a booster. 

People may choose any of the three available COVID-19 vaccines for
their booster dose when they are eligible, regardless of the vaccine
used when they were first vaccinated.

Health officials also strongly urge those who yet to be vaccinated to
do so as soon as possible. Kids ages 5-11 recently became eligible for a
pediatric version of the COVID-19 vaccine and parents can get their
children immunized through their regular healthcare provider, pharmacies, County clinics and, in some cases, at local schools.

Appointments through Contra Costa Health Services (CCHS) are recommended, and can be made online or by phone at 1-833-829-2626. People without appointments are accepted at county-run sites as time and vaccine supply allows.

CCHS Guidance for Safer Holiday Celebrations

   

This holiday season, Contra Costa Health Services (CCHS) encourages everyone to celebrate safely and protect themselves and their loved ones from COVID-19. According to CCHS, getting
vaccinated is the best way to lower the risk of getting or spreading
COVID-19, especially during holiday gatherings. Visit coronavirus.cchealth.org/get-vaccinated for locations, appointments and more information.

CCHS also recommends the following key actions to lower your risk:

Get Vaccinated

  • All the vaccines are safe, effective and free for anyone who is 5 or older. 
  • Get your first dose by November 19 to be fully protected for Christmas, Kwanzaa and end-of-year gatherings.
  • You can protect those too young to be vaccinated by making sure those around them are vaccinated

Wear a Mask

  • Wear a well-fitted mask over your nose and mouth if you’re in public indoor spaces.
  • A mask is required in most indoor public spaces in Contra Costa County, regardless of vaccination status.

Get Tested

  • Attending a gathering or event increases your chance of being exposed to COVID-19.
  • Testing is a healthy choice for people who attend gatherings – whether or not they develop symptoms.
  • Three to seven days after a gathering is the best time to test.
  • If you think you’ve been exposed to COVID-19 or develop symptoms, learn when to quarantine and isolate. 

Take Precautions if You Travel

  • If possible, delay travel if you are not vaccinated or feeling sick.
  • Masks are required on public transportation, such as planes and buses.
  • Avoid crowds.
  • Get tested before and after your trip.

Safer Celebrations

  • Gathering virtually or in-person only with people you live with is the safest choice. If you do gather with others:
  • Smaller gatherings are safer than larger ones.
  • Outdoors is safer than indoors.
  • Avoid crowded, poorly ventilated spaces.
  • If you gather indoors, open windows and doors to bring in fresh air, or put a fan in an open window.
  • If you feel sick, stay home and don’t host any gatherings.

How can I protect my unvaccinated family members?

  • Get vaccinated yourself.
  • Be sure everyone in your family who is 5 or older is fully vaccinated.
  • Wear a mask. You might choose to have everyone at your gathering wear a mask, regardless of vaccination status.

11/3 Update:

COVID vaccines are now available for children ages 5 - 11. Community healthcare providers, local pharmacies, and Contra Costa Health Services (CCHS) will all begin vaccinating county residents in this age group this week. The FDA, CDC, and the Western States Scientific Safety Review Work Group have all found that Pfizer’s vaccine is safe and highly effective for children aged 5 to 11. About 92,000 children in Contra Costa are newly eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine.

The pediatric dose is one-third the dosage given to teens and adults, and smaller needles will be used. As with adults, children ages 5-11 must still get two shots at least three weeks apart to get the maximum protection of the vaccine.

Appointments for children aged 5 to 11 will become available anywhere in the county that provides the COVID-19 vaccine in the coming days. Check with your child's pediatrician or primary care provider and ask if they have the vaccine.

CCHS will begin providing the Pfizer vaccine to 5- to 11-year-olds at their no-cost public health vaccination clinics in Antioch, Concord, and Richmond beginning on Friday. Contra Costa Regional Medical Center & Health Centers will begin vaccinating its patients on Monday. Appointments at their clinics in Antioch, Concord, and Richmond will be available beginning Thursday afternoon online or by calling 1-833-829-2626.

11/1 Update:

Today, Contra Costa Health Services (CCHS) announced that it has pre-ordered thousands of pediatric doses of Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine as the county prepares for Federal and State health officials to expand eligibility to kids ages 5-11.

According to a press release, CCHS expects to receive about 20,000 doses of the pediatric version of
the Pfizer vaccine for county and partner clinics early this week. Other
healthcare providers and pharmacies are also stocking up and getting
ready.

CCHS is also working with education and healthcare partners in the
region – including John Muir Health, Kaiser, La Clinica and Lifelong
Medical – to host vaccine clinics at school sites once eligibility
expands to younger kids. More details about
school-based vaccine clinics will be announced soon.

The timing of when the vaccine becomes available to younger children
depends on when Federal and State officials complete their review
process. On Friday, October 29, the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) approved the
Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for emergency use in children ages 5-11.

This week, the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) will
be deciding whether to recommend Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine next week for
children ages 5-11. The CDC's recommendation is required before
vaccines can be given to this age group.

If the CDC recommends the vaccine for the younger age group, it may take
a couple of days until immunization clinics actually begin
administering the pediatric vaccines, according to CCHS. The Western States Scientific
Safety Review Workgroup, a regional collaborative of scientists from
several states including California with expertise in immunization and
public health, must also weigh in after the CDC makes it decision.

Parents should check with their child's regular healthcare provider or
local pharmacies about availability. CCHS expects to begin offering the
pediatric vaccine by Nov. 6 at county-run vaccination clinics.

The pediatric COVID-19 vaccine, which is one-third the dosage given to
teens and adults, will come in different vials and packaging than the
adult version. Like with adults, children ages 5-11 still must get two
shots at least three weeks apart to get the maximum protection of the
vaccine, which was shown to have a 90.7% efficacy rate in clinical
trials among this age group.

10/25 Update:

Many Contra Costa residents who received Johnson & Johnson or Moderna COVID-19 vaccines can now consider booster doses – of any vaccine they prefer – for increased protection heading into this holiday season.

After reviewing research, the Centers for Disease Control &Prevention (CDC) and California Department of Public Health (CDPH) have
found that booster doses of all available COVID-19 vaccines are not only safe, but significantly improve protection against both infection and
serious illness, including from the delta variant.

Fully vaccinated people may also now choose any of the three available COVID-19 vaccines for their booster doses when they are eligible, regardless of the vaccine used during their initial immunization.

Contra Costa Health Services (CCHS) now recommends that anyone who received Johnson & Johnson vaccine and is 18 or older to get a booster dose two or more months after their first dose.

As with people vaccinated with the Pfizer vaccine, those who received Moderna vaccine should get a booster dose, according to the CDC, if at least six months have passed since they completed their initial course of vaccination, and they are:

People previously vaccinated with Moderna vaccine who may consider receiving a booster, based on their individual benefits and risks, include:

  • those who are 18 to 49 with underlying health conditions
  • those who are 18 to 64 and are at increased risk of COVID-19 exposure due to their occupation or institutional setting

According to CCHS, the best place for most Contra Costa residents to seek booster doses is through their own healthcare providers or their local neighborhood pharmacies. COVID-19 vaccine is now plentiful, and CCHS is in regular communication with community healthcare providers, clinics and pharmacies to ensure that all eligible residents can access vaccine.

Beginning Tuesday, October 26, CCHS' free vaccination clinics will also offer booster doses by appointment to anyone who is eligible. Call

10/14 Update:

Today, Contra Costa Health Services announced that, due to declining COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations, Contra Costa County will lift masking requirements on Nov 1 in certain indoor settings where everyone is fully vaccinated.

Eligible settings are in controlled spaces not open to the general public, including offices, gyms and fitness centers, employee commuter vehicles, indoor college classes and organized gatherings in any other indoor setting, such as a religious gathering.

Under the order, participating businesses, organizations and hosts must verify that all patrons, employees and attendees are fully vaccinated before allowing people inside their facilities not to wear face coverings. There can be no more than 100 persons present at these facilities, and the group of those present must gather on a regular basis. Those present should also not have COVID-19 symptoms.

Indoor-masking requirements would remain in effect for the time-being in public settings, such as bars, restaurants and retail stores until other targets are met. Masking would also still be required in indoor K-12 school settings.

10/8 Update:

Yesterday, Contra Costa County Health Officer Dr. Chris Farnitano announced the criteria that will be used to lift the current indoor-masking order in Contra Costa County:

  • The county reaches the CDC’s moderate (yellow) COVID-19 transmission tier and remains there for at least three weeks; AND

  • There are fewer than 75 COVID-19 hospitalizations in the county; AND

  • One of the following conditions is met:

    • 80% of the total population is fully vaccinated

    • Eight weeks have passed since a COVID-19 vaccine has been authorized for emergency use by federal and state authorities for 5- to 11-year-olds

The county reaches the CDC’s moderate (yellow) COVID-19 transmission tier and remains there for at least three weeks; AND

There are fewer than 75 COVID-19 hospitalizations in the county; AND

One of the following conditions is met:

80% of the total population is fully vaccinated

Eight weeks have passed since a COVID-19 vaccine has been authorized for emergency use by federal and state authorities for 5- to 11-year-olds

When these criteria are met – which is projected to be at the end of 2021 or beginning of 2022, according to CCHS – Dr. Farnitano will lift the local masking order, which requires everyone to wear face coverings in indoor public settings regardless of vaccination status. After the local masking order is lifted, unvaccinated residents will still need to wear masks in indoor public settings under the state’s face-covering order.

Other COVID-19 related health orders that are in place at that time would not be affected, including the health order related to verifying vaccination or testing status at high-risk businesses.

Contra Costa County is currently in the CDC's substantial (orange) COVID-19 transmission tier.

As of October 8, 66 people were hospitalized with COVID-19 in Contra Costa County.

As of October 8, 71.3% of all Contra Costa residents have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19. (This number reflects total population; earlier statistics reflected vaccination rates for those who were 12 and older.)

9/27 Update:

Some groups of Contra Costa residents who have received Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine can now consider a booster dose if at least six months have passed since they were fully vaccinated.

According to Contra Costa Health Services (CCHS), Pfizer and the other available COVID-19 vaccines continue to provide excellent protection against infection, and especially against serious illness from the virus. But, as with most vaccines, their protection diminishes over time.

Scientists have been researching how long high levels of protection will last. After reviewing the research, federal and state health experts have determined that some people who received Pfizer vaccine should get a booster, including:

Others vaccinated with Pfizer who are now eligible for booster doses include people 18 or older with underlying health conditions, or who are at increased risk of exposure to the virus due to their work or living situation. Read the California Department of Public Health guidelines for more information.

CCHS does not yet have health guidance for any other groups who received Pfizer vaccine, or those who received Moderna or Johnson & Johnson (Janssen) – research continues for those vaccines.

If you are fully vaccinated, it is not urgent to get a booster dose – you still have excellent protection against COVID-19.

Many options for COVID-19 vaccine are easily available across the county, including healthcare providers and local pharmacies. 9/17 Update:

Starting Sept. 22, 2021, everyone 12 years and older must show proof of full COVID-19 vaccination, or a negative test result, before going to high-risk indoor businesses
such as restaurants, bars and gyms in Contra Costa County. Workers at
these businesses must be fully vaccinated or test weekly, starting Nov.
1, 2021.

9/10 Update:

8/24 Update:

Today, Contra Costa Health Services updated the county’s Mass Quarantine Order, and Contra Costa residents exposed to someone with COVID-19 can now narrow down the number of days they must spend in quarantine by testing for the virus at the right time.

Close contacts of persons diagnosed with COVID-19 are required to quarantine themselves, with exceptions for certain persons fully vaccinated with a COVID-19 vaccine, certain essential workers in critical infrastructure sectors, and students in K-12 school settings under specified circumstances. This updated Health Order provides an additional exception, allowing persons who are required to quarantine to end the quarantine period after day 7 instead of after day 10 if they are asymptomatic and test negative for the COVID-19 virus on or after the sixth day after the last date of exposure, consistent with guidance issued by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH).

8/2 Update:

Today, eight Bay Area Health Officers announced health orders requiring all individuals, regardless of vaccination status, to wear face coverings when indoors in public settings, with limited exceptions, starting at 12:01 a.m. on Tuesday, August 3, in order to slow the spread of the more contagious Delta variant of COVID-19.

“Vaccination continues to protect against severe COVID-19 illness,” according to a press release from Bay Area Health Officers, “but with the COVID-19 Delta variant now infecting a small percentage of vaccinated people as well as many unvaccinated people, eight Bay Area health officers have issued health orders requiring masks indoors in public places.”

“Vaccines remain the most powerful tool in the fight against COVID-19, including the Delta variant,” states the press release. “Nonetheless, the Delta variant is infecting a small percentage of the vaccinated in the Bay Area — who still remain strongly protected against severe illness, hospitalization, and death. In those instances of infection in a vaccinated person, a face covering prevents further spread.”

Public settings where face coverings must be worn include, but are not limited to, business offices, retail stores, restaurants, theaters, family entertainment centers, meeting rooms and State and local government facilities where services are provided to the public.

This order does not apply to people in the following circumstances:

  • When alone in a room.
  • When actively eating or drinking.
  • When swimming or showering.
  • When receiving care or other service that requires removal of the face covering, including by way of example and without limitation, medical care requiring exposure of the nose or mouth, cosmetic services involving the face, and dental procedures.
  • When exempt from wearing face coverings under the State Face Covering Guidance or other applicable California Department of Public Health (CDPH) guidance. The State Face Covering Guidance exempts the following individuals from wearing masks:
    • Persons younger than two years old. Very young children must not wear a mask because of the risk of suffocation.
    • Persons with a medical condition, mental health condition, or disability that prevents wearing a mask, including persons with a medical condition for whom wearing a mask could obstruct breathing or who are unconscious, incapacitated, or otherwise unable to remove a mask without assistance.
    • Persons who are hearing impaired, or communicating with a person who is hearing impaired, where the ability to see the mouth is essential for communication.
    • Persons for whom wearing a mask would create a risk to the person related to their work, as determined.

Bay Area health officials also urge all unvaccinated residents 12 and older to get vaccinated as soon as possible.

7/16 Update:

Today, Contra Costa County, along with the Counties of Alameda, Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Sonoma, and the City of Berkeley, issued a press release recommending that everyone, regardless of vaccination status, wear masks indoors in public places as a precaution against increased circulation of COVID-19.

Bay Area Health Officers will revisit this recommendation in the coming
weeks as they continue to monitor transmission rates, hospitalizations,
deaths, and increasing vaccination rates throughout the region. Contra

6/28 Update:

As of June 28, 2021, critical eviction protections in California have been extended through September 30, 2021 to help keep California families in their homes. Additionally, the CA COVID-19 Rent Relief program now covers 100% of unpaid and future rent and utilities
for income-eligible renters and their landlords who have been impacted
by the pandemic. Those who have already applied and received payment
will receive additional funds to reach 100% compensation.

Applicants may qualify regardless of immigration status and will not be
required to show proof of citizenship. All application information is
kept private and will not be shared. Assistance from the CA COVID-19
Rent Relief program does not count as earned income for renters, and
will not interfere with eligibility for any other state benefit

Dear San Ramon Community,

As of Tuesday, June 15, California's tier system is no longer in effect, and COVID-19 capacity and distancing restrictions have been lifted for most businesses and activities in the state. On Thursday, June 17, workplace safety guidelines were updated by Cal/OSHA.

Contra Costa Health Services is accepting requests for free mobile COVID-19 vaccine clinics to community groups and workplaces of 5 or more eligible people in Contra Costa County. 

The Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) and the Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG) have released Draft Plan Bay Area 2050, a 30-year plan charting a course for a Bay Area that is affordable, connected, diverse, healthy, and vibrant for all its residents through 2050 and beyond. Draft Plan Bay Area 2050, along with drafts of the Implementation Plan and various supplemental reports, are all available for public review and comment between now and 5 p.m. on July 20, 2021.

The City of San Ramon is accepting applications for several Advisory Committee & Board Openings.

Children's Participatory Fountains in the city are now open, along with drop-in recreation swim at the San Ramon Olympic Pool and Dougherty Valley Aquatic Center; and drop-in lap swim returns Monday, June 21.

Registration is open for the Run San Ramon 5k on Sunday, July 4, and the Summer Concert in the Park series returns in July.

Beyond the Blueprint: California Reopening & Updated Mask Guidance

On June 15, California moved beyond the Blueprint for a Safer Economy. Capacity and distancing restrictions have been lifted for most businesses and activities in the state, and the tier system is no longer in effect. The California Department of Public Health's updated mask guidance is in effect as of June 15.

On June 17, California’s Occupational Safety and Health Standards Board (Cal/OSHA) relaxed its workplace-safety rules. Physical distancing is no longer required in the workplace and fully vaccinated employees generally do not have to wear masks on the job anymore.

Contra Costa County is aligned with the new state guidelines for employers, which include:

  • Employers may allow fully vaccinated employees not to wear face coverings indoors but must document their vaccination status.
  • Unvaccinated employees still must wear masks indoors except when alone in a room or vehicle or when eating or drinking.
  • No face covering requirements outdoors (except during outbreaks), regardless of vaccination status.
  • Workplaces still would be required to provide masks to workers who are not fully vaccinated for COVID-19.
  • No physical distancing or barrier requirements regardless of employee vaccination status except during workplace outbreaks.

CA COVID-19 Rent & Utility Assistance Applications Simplified

Applications for rent and utility assistance through California's COVID-19 Rent Relief program have been simplified: it now takes less time to complete, requires fewer documents to be uploaded, and offers helpful tips throughout the application.

Assistance is available for unpaid rent dating back to April 1, 2020, as well as future rent payments. Assistance is also available for past due utility payments dating back to April 1, 2020, or for future utility bills, both of which may be paid directly to the utility provider at 100% of cost but are limited to a total of 12 months.

Income-eligible renters and their landlords who have been impacted by COVID-19 and need help with unpaid or upcoming rent or utilities can verify eligibility and apply immediately by visiting HousingIsKey.com, or by calling 833-430-2122. Once your application has been processed, you will be notified about the application status and next steps.

Mobile COVID-19 Vaccine Clinics Available by Request for Groups of 5 or More

Businesses and community organizations in Contra Costa can now request visits from Contra Costa Health Services' (CCHS) mobile COVID-19 vaccination van to workplaces, community centers and other locations where five or more members of a group want to receive vaccine.

Any business or organization can request a mobile vaccination clinic using an online form if they are in the county, and CCHS will send a mobile health van to provide free vaccinations on site within one week after completing the request. 

Clinics operate weekdays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will only travel to locations within the county, though they will vaccinate anyone eligible regardless of where they live. There is no cap on the number of people who can be vaccinated during a visit.

Draft Plan Bay Area: Public Comment Period Open Until 5 p.m. on July 20

After more than three years of public discussion and technical analysis, the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) and the Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG) have released Draft Plan Bay Area 2050.

Defined by 35 strategies that strive for resilient and equitable outcomes, this 30-year plan charts a course for a Bay Area that is affordable, connected, diverse, healthy, and vibrant for all its residents through 2050 and beyond. Draft Plan Bay Area 2050, along with drafts of the Implementation Plan and various supplemental reports, are all available for review and comment.

All comments must be received by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, July 20, 2021.

Several virtual workshops or virtual public hearings will be held, where residents can learn more, ask questions, and offer comments on the draft plan.

Drop-In Rec Swim Now Open; Drop-In Lap Swim Returns Monday, June 21

Drop-in Recreation Swim is now available during current recreation swim hours at the San Ramon Olympic Pool and Dougherty Valley Aquatic Center. All participants 1 years old and above entering the facility are able to pre-register for recreation swim through July 3; pre-registration is not required.  

Beginning Monday, June 21, Lap Swim will return to a drop-in program, and reservations are no longer required. Swimmers will be able to attend lap swim at any time during current lap swim hours at the San Ramon Olympic Pool & Dougherty Valley Aquatic Center.

Register Today for Run San Ramon 5k Run/Walk: Sunday, July 4

Get a healthy start to your 4th of July with this Independence Day classic. Enjoy the paved and looped 5k course through San Ramon, starting and ending at the San Ramon Community Center.
