San Ramon-Based Chevron Joins Group Focused On Hydrogen Use

The Hydrogen Council is a coalition of energy, transport and industry groups seeking to focus on hydrogen's role in the future energy mix.

SAN RAMON, CA — San Ramon-based Chevron Corporation announced Tuesday that it has joined the Hydrogen Council, an international coalition of energy, transport and industry companies that seek to increase their hydrogen use and support the use of hydrogen in the future of the energy industry.

The council was formed during the 2017 World Economic Forum in Davos. It aims to bring together business, policymakers, investors and public servants to create a plan for the next chapter of hydrogen use, according to its website.

Companies such as BP, Honda, Hyundai Motor, Kawasaki, Michelin, Toyota, Shell, BMW GROUP, Audi AG and more represented on the Hydrogen Council Steering Group. Council partners are located in Europe, Asia and North and South America.

Chevron said in a press release that it uses hydrogen at its refineries in processes such as refining crude. It operated five hydrogen filling stations from 2005 to 2010 as part of a hydrogen demonstration project in Northern California, backed by the Department of Energy.

The company said it plans to conduct hydrogen fueling pilots and California locations.

“Our support for the Hydrogen Council reflects our view that hydrogen can play a role in a lower carbon future as a transportation fuel, an industrial feedstock and an energy storage medium," said Chevron Chairman and CEO Michael Wirth in the press release.
