A local survivor-employee helped lead the charge, underscoring the impact of care close to home.

2. Santa Maria Secures Funding to Repair & Reopen Downtown Sports Fields (keyt.com) — Santa Maria has secured $1.2 million in state funding to upgrade sidewalks, ADA ramps, streets, and bike lanes around Simas Park, paving the way to reopen long-closed Barbettini Field downtown. The improvements will restore a historic Little League home field, reduce travel burdens on families, and ease pressure on the city budget by relying on outside funds instead of the local General Fund.

3. Free Spay and Neuter Services Offered in Northern Santa Barbara County for Six Months (keyt.com) — Santa Maria pet owners can get free spay and neuter surgeries for dogs and cats through March at Santa Barbara Humane's Santa Maria clinic and mobile clinic, by appointment. The six‑month program targets North County communities, aiming to keep pets healthier, prevent unwanted litters, and ease pressure on local shelters while offering financial help for other veterinary needs.

4. Santa Barbara housing officials survey rents to update federal housing assistance rates (ksby.com) — Santa Maria renters and landlords are being asked to complete a new countywide survey that could directly influence how much federal housing assistance is available locally. Santa Barbara housing authorities hope updated rent data, including from North County cities like Santa Maria, will convince HUD to raise Fair Market Rents. Residents have until Nov. 29 to submit information about what they pay or charge.

5. Allan Hancock College highlights record financial aid application rate (ksby.com) — Allan Hancock College's Santa Maria campus recently hosted a conversation with California Student Aid Commission director Daisy Gonzales focused on boosting financial aid access for Central Coast students.
