📰 News we're reading

1. Weekend college round up: Cal Poly football holds off upset-minded Central Washington (keyt.com) — Santa Barbara college sports fans saw mixed results this weekend, with UCSB women's soccer earning a dramatic late equalizer and SBCC football falling on the road. Local interest extends to UCSB women's volleyball and men's water polo, plus nearby Cal Poly and Ventura College football action that many Santa Barbara residents follow closely.

2. Showers, humidity in Santa Barbara County (ksby.com) — Expect unusually humid, showery weather and potentially dangerous surf conditions along Santa Barbara County beaches this Labor Day, with a beach hazard statement in effect through Sept. 8. Locals and visitors are still heading to the shore, but meteorologists warn of strong rip currents and high surf tied to offshore Hurricane Marie's moisture, so extra caution in the water is essential.

3. Santa Barbara County Named in Amber Alert for Girl, Father Linked to Baby's Death (noozhawk.com) — Santa Barbara County is included in a wide-ranging Amber Alert for 14-year-old Diana Galvez Ortega, believed to be traveling with her father, Sergio Galvez Perez, in a white Nissan Altima after a newborn was found dead in Monterey County. Local residents are urged to watch for the pair and immediately call 9-1-1 with any sightings or vehicle details, but not to approach them.

4. 'Postcards from Paradise' Event Encourages Voter Participation (keyt.com) — Local volunteers gathered at Draughtsmen Aleworks in Goleta to handwrite thousands of postcards urging Democratic voters in key battleground areas, including California's 48th District, to turn out in November. Santa Barbara residents joined this grassroots push, hoping higher participation can help change the political direction they see for the country.
