18 Arrests, 7 Citations Over New Year's In Santa Cruz

Officers answered 113 calls from 5 p.m. Dec. 31 to 2 a.m. on New Year's Day, Jan. 1, 2019.

SANTA CRUZ, CA – Eighten arrests for alleged public intoxication were made during 2018-19 New Year's festivities in Santa Cruz, but with no major incidents recorded, according to officials.

"The Santa Cruz Police Department is pleased to announce that 2019 was welcomed without any major incidents," the agency said. "As part of the enacted Safety Enhancement Zone where certain Santa Cruz Municipal Code violations incur 'triple fines,' SCPD deployed additional officers on foot patrol throughout the Downtown corridor ensuring a safe New Year’s Eve celebration for all."

Seven citations also were issued -- six of which fell under the "triple-fine" designation, police said.

To ring in 2019, approximately 2,000 revelers gathered for the city-sponsored countdown celebration at the Town Clock which included music and a small fireworks display.
