SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, CA — Sophia, a 14-year-old dog, was reunited with her family this week after a burglar left open the family's gate, leaving Sophia to wander off, the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office said.

The family returned to their home earlier this week to find a burglary had occurred and Sophia was missing. Nearly 10 hours later, deputies said they caught a glimpse of a dog matching Sophia's description dodging traffic near Green Valley and Holohan roads.

Sophia was too skittish to leave with deputies, the sheriff's office said. They tried dog treats to no avail. Sophia was chased through berry fields. Deputies called her family for help.
