Several are based directly in Santa Cruz neighborhoods, signaling new options for local services, wellness, nightlife, and entrepreneurship that residents may soon see opening in their own parts of town.

Santa Cruz Events Oct. 8–14: Rickie Lee Jones & More (goodtimes.sc) — Over the coming week, Santa Cruz hosts big-name shows from Soulja Boy at the Civic Auditorium and Rickie Lee Jones at the Rio, plus free and ticketed performances across town. You'll also find a new media festival, metal and reggae concerts, and world music sets in Santa Cruz, Felton, Boulder Creek, and beyond, with prices and venues clearly listed.

Bill inspired by murder of Maddy Middleton passes into California state law (santacruzsentinel.com) — A new California law taking effect Jan. 1, 2027, was shaped directly by the Santa Cruz community's response to the murder of 8-year-old Maddy Middleton and the lengthy detention extension hearing for Adrian Gonzalez. It tightens rules for extending custody of serious youth offenders, lengthening possible extensions to three years and clarifying procedures, with strong backing from Santa Cruz prosecutors, police and victim advocates.

Violent head-on crash kills 3, including UCLA, UC Santa Cruz students (newsbreak.com) — A UC Santa Cruz biology student, 18-year-old Sebastian Burgos, was among three young people killed in a head-on crash near Salinas on Sunday night that also claimed the life of a UCLA student. UC Santa Cruz officials confirmed his enrollment and say counseling and support are being offered to students, faculty and staff as friends and family organize fundraisers to cover funeral and related expenses.
