UPDATE On Live Oak Pedestrian Accident: Man, 70, Struck

His protective pup refused to allow rescue crews near the injured man. A neighbor came to get the dog.

A 70-year-old man suffered minor injuries this morning after being hit by a Buick Skylark while walking a dog in the Live Oak area of unincorporated Santa Cruz County.

The incident was reported at 9:08 a.m. at the intersection of Brommer Street and 30th Avenue, according to Central Fire Protection District spokesman Mike Demars.

The man was walking a German shepherd at the time of the incident, and after the crash the dog initially wouldn’t let emergency personnel anywhere near the victim, according to Demars.

Firefighters called animal control personnel to the scene, but before their arrival a woman who said she was the victim’s neighbor took the dog into her possession, according to DeMars.

The victim was treated at the scene and then transported to Valley Medical Center in San Jose.

The driver, a 69-year-old man, was headed east on Brommer Street when the crash occurred, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The driver came to a complete stop before proceeding at an estimated speed of 3 miles per hour, but the sun was in his eyes when the victim crossed the road in front of his vehicle, the CHP said. Drugs and alcohol were not a factor.

Both men are Santa Cruz residents.
