Wayward Goat Loses Police K-9 Job, Finds New Friends At Sheriff’s Office

"Betty didn't realize she was a goat… and we didn't have the heart to tell her."

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, CA — Hundreds apply and aspire to become officers of the law, but only a few are able to make the cut. A local Santa Cruz County goat learned that lesson — or maybe she didn’t, because it is pretty tough to tell with goats — last week after going on an unplanned ride-along with the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office. Betty, the wayward goat, wasn't baaaaad. She just goaded people the wrong way. Or perhaps she was just too jumpy...

Sheriff’s office officials shared Betty’s impromptu police K-9 application process via Facebook on May 4.

“We put ‘Betty’ through a ride along to test her skills. At the end of the testing she unfortunately didn't get the position. Betty didn't realize she was a goat… and we didn't have the heart to tell her… Betty did do a great job though and has a future as a wonderful household pet.”

She may not have a future in police work, but her future as the barn pet looks bright. Betty was found in the area of Green Valley Road near the South County Service Center. Anyone who recognizes or owns Betty is asked to call 831-786-6550.
