According to SMPD Lieutenant Rudy Flores, the van driver, who was identified as Manuel Jaramillo, shot at the SUV driver, who was identified as Emilio Reyes, before the collision. Flores said this prompted Reyes to turn around and come back to intentionally ram his SUV into the van two times while Jaramillo was still inside.

Jaramillo then fired several more shots at Reyes, one hitting him in his upper arm Flores said.
