SANTA MONICA, CA – The Santa Monica City Council selected Ana Maria Jara to fill the vacant council seat at the Tuesday night meeting. Council declared this seat vacant on January 8, 2019 after former Councilmember Tony Vazquez resigned due to his election to the State Board of Equalization.

The new councilmember has lived in the same rent-controlled apartment in Santa Monica for almost 35 years and has worked at Santa Monica College for more than 25 years, according to the City of Santa Monica press release.
"She is a strategic and tireless advocate and has worked on smart and inclusive solutions on a wide range of issues including being involved in the City’s Cradle to Career initiative since its inception," the press release said. "Prior to her Council appointment, she served as Chair and Vice Chair for Santa Monica’s Social Services Commission. She also served on the Commission for the Status of Women from 2007 to 2010."
