Emeritus Student Exhibition To Open At Santa Monica College

An exhibition featuring work by John Alcantara, Anne Axelrad and Mercedes Garcia will open July 25 with a reception.

SANTA MONICA, CA — From Santa Monica College:

The Santa Monica College Emeritus Art Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of paintings created by Emeritus students John Alcantara, Anne Axelrad, and Mercedes Garcia. The three outstanding painters were brought together through a common interest in Surrealist painting and expressive mark-making.

The exhibition is open to the public from Thursday, July 25, to Wednesday, September 18, with an opening reception from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 25. The exhibition and opening reception are free.

“I gathered these three artists based on their proclivity for Surrealist aesthetics and their layered and complex painting and collage gestures,” said Emeritus Gallery director Jesse Benson. ”The show will be stylistically diverse, but will be consistently deep, powerful, symbolic, and uncanny.”
