Man Tries To Steal Car In Santa Monica, Injures Pedestrian

The driver of the car tried to stop the suspect but the suspect drove the car for a block, striking a wheelchair-bound pedestrian.

SANTA MONICA, CA — A driver who left a vehicle argue with a bicyclist was hurt Saturday when a male suspect got into the driver's car and tried to steal it, injuring a wheelchair-bound person in the process, authorities said.

It happened at 2:10 p.m. at Second Street and Colorado Avenue, Santa Monica police Lt. Saul Rodriguez said.

When the driver left the car to confront a bicyclist, "an opportunist got in and tried to steal the car," Rodriguez said. The driver suffered minor injuries when he tried to stop the theft.

The suspect continued northbound on Second street for a block, striking vehicles along the way and then he struck a wheelchair bound person at Second Street and Broadway, the lieutenant said. The suspect was taken into custody.

His age was not available.

The second victim was taken to a hospital with injuries not believed life-threatening, Rodriguez said. The driver whose car was taken was not taken to a hospital.

The victims' genders were not released.
