Student Accessed SMMUSD's Email
Gmail is temporarily disbanded after a student accessed the district's server for 16 minutes late Friday night.
SANTA MONICA, CA — A student in the Santa Monica–Malibu Unified School District accessed the school system's email system around midnight on Friday, according to Superintendent Dr. Ben Drati.
Drati reported that the student was able to send messages to the student body for 16 minutes before the district's technology team discovered the incident and disabled the system, Drati said in a district news release via email.
As of Monday morning, the Gmail application was up and running, but teachers can use private comments within Google Docs Assignments or use the Stream within Google Classroom for public comments.
Drati recommended that students and parents temporarily sign out of Gmail on all devices.
"We apologize for this disruption," he said. "The district is committed to protecting our learning tools and platforms and maintaining student data and privacy."
