Lakeside Man ID'd as Victim in Fatal Crash Near El Capitan Preserve

The 58-year-old motorcyclist died Wednesday at the scene of the crash on Wildcat Canyon Road.

LAKESIDE, CA β€” A motorcyclist who died in a crash Wednesday near El Capitan Preserve was identified by authorities Thursday as a 58-year-old Lakeside man.

At 4:22 p.m. Wednesday, Rohn Carson Elsner was traveling on his 2005 Kawasaki northbound in the 11900 block of Wildcat Canyon Road in Lakeside, just past Muth Valley Road, when authorities say he crossed the double-yellow line into the opposite lane in an attempt to pass a 2014 Nissan Sentra driven by a 36-year-old Ramona man, according to reports from the California Highway Patrol and the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office.

"As he was passing, the right side of the motorcycle struck the left side of the Nissan," CHP Spokesman Kevin Pearlstein said. "The motorcycle veered to the left and struck the dirt embankment."

Elsner was thrown from the bike and landed in the southbound lane directly in the path of an International truck driven by a 48-year-old Vista man.

"The driver of the truck had no time to take evasive action and struck the rider," Pearlstein said.

Emergency personnel who arrived after 911 was called tried to revive Elsner, but he was pronounced dead at the scene about 25 minutes after the crash.

The other drivers did not suffer injuries, Pearlstein said.

"No other vehicles were involved and alcohol and or drugs were not a factor," he said.
