<h3>About the Class</h3>
<p>This workshop is specifically designed for <strong>complete beginners</strong>
 who want to explore Raku ceramics. It serves as a foundational step for
 anyone intending to register for Ken Carmean’s subsequent Raku Firing 
course.This introductory class is focused on preparation and theory and <strong>will not include an actual firing</strong>
 of the Raku kiln. The emphasis is on building the knowledge base and 
technical understanding for a successful firing experience. In this 
workshop we will look at the history and philosophy of Raku. We will 
explore the materials, such as glazes and clay, that will set you up for
 success. We will also talk about safety and personal protection to 
bring while firing the kiln. This workshop will have a hands-on 
component, where we will create sculptural work to bisque for the 
upcoming firing with Ken Carmean.&nbsp; We will conduct a thorough “dry run” 
simulation of the entire Raku firing sequence. This demonstration will 
cover every step, from loading the kiln using tongs and placing the 
piece into the reduction chamber (e.g., metal can with combustibles).</p>

 Trashion Fashion Sonoma fundraiser returns to the Sonoma Veterans 
Memorial Hall for two shows on Saturday, April 18th, at 1:30 PM and 5:00
 PM.<br><br>In its 16th year, the beloved Trashion Fashion Runway Show 
will feature over forty designers who make wearable art from recycled 
and unconventional materials. Designers and models, from adults, teens, 
and tweens, will be strutting down a 60-foot runway and igniting the 
curiosity and hearts of the audience!<br><br>Costa’s Tacos truck will 
have food available for purchase, and beverages will be available on the
 patio. The 5 p.m. seating includes a closing reception with delicious 
bites by Isa Jacoby. Seating is determined during event registration.</p>

 exploring color, line, shape, design principles, and paper-mounting

<h3>About the Class</h3>
<p>In
 this workshop, French-American collage artist Catherine Cruz will teach
 you how to create a dynamic series of abstract collages using elements 
such as color, line and shape. You will work on four small wood panels 
to compose a cohesive series. Working on several panels at once offers 
several advantages, including greater creative momentum, the ability to 
build a strong thematic connection between pieces, and a way to maintain
 creative flow. This technique allows for a deeper exploration of an 
idea or theme than is possible with a single piece.<br><br>We will start
 with short composition exercises to discuss design principles and 
abstraction. Then Catherine will demonstrate her method for mounting 
papers on the panels. You will have ample time to select papers and 
create your designs.<br><br>We will take a short break for lunch between 12:30 and 1:00 pm so please bring your lunch and a beverage.<br><br>What you’ll learn from this workshop:</p>

<p>Roll up your sleeves and join us for a special evening of “Trashion” Print Lab!<br><br>Our
 mission is to explore a creative arts technique socially with our 
community. Print Lab is not a traditional class, but an affordable 
art-making experience. We welcome you to print, play and experiment with
 an activity to create something unique in our printmaking studio!&nbsp;<br><br><strong>In honor of “Trashion Fashion” we are focusing on creative reuse, and sustainable printmaking!&nbsp;</strong><br><br>Tetra
 Pak printmaking is an eco-friendly and accessible art technique that 
repurposes used food and beverage cartons – like those for milk, juice, 
or broth, as printing plates. It is a form of intaglio printmaking 
(similar to drypoint etching), where you scratch or “incise” a design 
into the carton’s inner foil or plastic lining to create a printable 
surface. Carton printing is widely considered a highly sustainable 
alternative to traditional etching because it prioritizes creative reuse
 and non-toxic processes.<br><br>Recycle, repurpose and recreate! Learn 
how to turn garbage into beautiful prints! We will demonstrate how to 
draw, scratch, cut, ink and print carton surfaces on our presses with 
water-soluble etching inks. Guests will leave with their own prints they
 create! <strong><em>We have plenty of cartons to share, but we 
encourage guests to bring their own cleaned Tetra Pak’s and milk cartons
 to use or donate to the printmaking studio.</em></strong><br><br>No printmaking experience is necessary. Light refreshments will be provided.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This
 workshop is an introduction to mid-range soda firing, with hands-on 
training in the process of loading, firing, and maintaining our 
crossdraft kiln named “Julia”.<br><br>Participants in this workshop will
 learn the fundamentals of atmospheric soda firing. The class will be 
instructed in the safety and care of the equipment as well as guided 
through the firing process.<br><br>This workshop includes instruction on
 glazing, wadding the ceramic pieces, loading the kiln, firing the kiln,
 and kiln maintenance. Demos and Lectures will also happen during the 
firing.<br><br>Participants will bring bisque-ware to be fired as bare 
clay or with slipped surfaces. There will be an assortment of flashing 
slips and glazes to apply to the bisqueware on loading day for those who
 choose to use them.&nbsp;<br><br>Each participant gets 1 cubic foot of firing space.<br><br>(Tip; Make sure all your pots fit approximately into a milk crate which is 1 cubic foot of space).<br><br>This firing will be a reduction fired cone 6 with sprayed soda at the end.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The
 culmination of Trashion Fashion events season is the free wrap up party
 called “Trash Bash”&nbsp;which takes&nbsp;place at the Sonoma Community Center.<br><br>Attendees
 will have the rare opportunity to see all of the Trashion Runway Show 
outfits up-close, as well as meet with and talk to the designers.&nbsp;The 
Runway Show winners will be announced, and a final exciting bid call for
 the Trashion Barbies &amp; Bags Auction will take place.<br><br>To 
complete the efforts of waste management mindfulness, Trash Bash 
attendees will be able to visit with Sonoma County waste management 
organizations, and shop with local Sonoma County sustainability

<p>From ancient monuments carved in stone to bold contemporary abstraction, sculpture has always been a defiant presence in the world. It occupies space and refuses to be ignored. This year’s International Sculpture Days event embraces the belief that sculpture can inspire, provoke, and challenge the world around us. Each artist will present their work , and visitors can engage in acts of “defiant dissidence,” exploring how art can serve as both personal reflection and public voice.</p>
<p>The event draws on a long tradition of artists and citizens using visual language to express dissent, question norms, and imagine new possibilities. <h4>Blending classical ballet with folklórico traditions, Por la Luz de la Luna celebrates the beauty and richness of Mexican heritage while honoring the experiences of Mexican Americans. This is a story of identity, courage, and family, shining a light on the enduring power of traditions passed from one generation to the next.</h4>
<p>This original ballet libretto was inspired by award-winning author and arts activist Aida Salazar’s story of her great-aunt, Jovita Valdovinos, who fought for religious freedom in Mexico’s Cristero War in the 1930s. Por la Luz de la Luna brings a fictional account of Jovita’s story to life, weaving history, mythology, and family legacy into a powerful theatrical experience while celebrating her heroism. As one of the few Mexican-themed ballets in history, it creates a space for dancers of all backgrounds to portray Latina/o characters, highlighting unique stories and honoring Mexican and Mexican-American heritage on stage. Set to 20th-century Mexican classical music by composers such as Carlos Chávez and José Pablo Moncayo, the ballet is brought to life through striking sets and Aztec-inspired costumes designed by visual artist PEMEX. It premiered on April 9, 2016, at the Sebastiani Theatre and continues to be a highlight of the company’s repertory.</p>

<h3>What you’ll do</h3>
<p>Learn to make stunning, one-of-a-kind botanical prints inspired from the natural world!<br><br>Join
 Kelly in this one-day experimental monotype printmaking workshop where 
you will explore techniques on the printing press. Students will learn 
how to achieve unique color compositions using local flora as stencils 
through simple layering and masking in a supportive group learning 
environment. Guests are invited to print using a wide variety of spring 
foliage and preserved botanicals. Kelly will also discuss and 
demonstrate how to add dimension to prints by using textures, mixed 
media and collage. It is sure to be a fun and awe-inspiring class for 
beginners or even experienced printmakers interested in learning a 
beautiful new technique.<br><br>If you love plants, and you’ve always wanted to try monotype, this class is sure to motivate and inspire you!</p>
