This special book arts workshop is perfect for anyone interested in

exploring a different twist on a creative book structure! Join guest

artist, Bettina Pauly for a special introduction in how to create an

original artistic concept flag book. Creation of this 3D book design,

will include a concertina fold, glued 3” x 2” cardstock “flags” into

folds, decoration of pages, cover design, assembly and book cover

finishing with bookbinding cloth.

Originally invented by Hedi

Kyle, the traditional flag book has small panels that cross each other

when the book opens and closes. The Flag Book is described as a

portable, expandable file that can display an array of materials in an

animated way. It is made out of an accordion fold, with small cards

glued into the folds, and a cover. Operating with the assistance of the

accordion fold, it has the freedom to expand and retract. It can be read

page by page or pulled apart for the full effect of an uninterrupted

scenario. Standing, the Flag Book also will turn into a circular star

book as the covers are held together at the back.

This workshop

welcomes beginners, and artists of all levels. The instructor will offer

guided instruction in a supportive learning environment with a limited

class size over the course of two sessions. The class materials fee will

include paper and all the tools needed to create each of these

projects. Students are welcome to bring their own paper sources or

artwork they might choose to incorporate, and are able to take home

their very own book project at the end of the workshop.

Please note: This

class requires some hand dexterity to maneuver bookbinding tools.

Participants should feel comfortable using tools with sharp edges.
