The State Department of Public Health mandated new restrictions for bars, restaurants, and other internal business operations in Sonoma County as part of state actions to slow the acceleration of coronavirus transmission. The restrictions take effect this Monday, July 13 at 12:01 am and will remain in effect until the state takes further action, but not before August 2.

Similar to restrictive actions taken by the state in other California counties, the state health order prohibits indoor activities in which the public remains in prolonged contact with people who are not members of their own home. These meetings have been identified as helping to transmit the coronavirus.
The following types of businesses cannot operate indoor activities:

The state order allows affected businesses to offer limited outdoor services such as:

● Wine cellars and tasting rooms may operate outdoors without the requirement to serve food.
● Bars, clubs, breweries and distilleries can serve alcohol outdoors but only in the same transaction in which a meal is ordered.
The state order is issued after coronavirus data did not improve during a 72-hour monitoring period, which ended Sunday. Dr. Sundari Mase, Public Health Officer, noted that the infection rate per 100,000 residents had increased sixfold, from 20 cases in early June to more than 120 on July 12.
"This new order from the state is not a surprise due to the rapid increase in our rate of infections and hospitalizations," said Dr. Mase. "This will be one more tool to help slow contagion in our community."
The state monitors various data across counties to determine if restrictions are needed to decrease coronavirus transmission. Last month, the state imposed restrictions in many California counties, including neighboring Marin and Napa counties.
