Sonoma Co. Woman's Ex-Boyfriend Arrested, Accused Of Stalking, Vehicle Vandalism, Weapon Offenses

BREAKING: A search warrant was executed today at his residence.

PETALUMA, CA – A Petaluma man was arrested last week for allegedly stalking his ex-girlfriend after he purportedly damaged her vehicle, punctured her tires and showed up at her door with a gun, police said.

Scott Aaron Smith, 58, was arrested Oct. 30 by the Petaluma Police Department and is in custody at Sonoma County Jail on charges including suspicion of possession of stolen property, possession of an assault weapon, possession of a high-capacity magazine and possession of firearms while subject to a restraining order.

Smith allegedly terrorized the victim, and early on Oct. 28 caused "substantial damage" to the woman’s vehicle, parked in front of her house on Rio Vista Way, by hitting it with his truck and then puncturing both driver's side tires with a knife, police said.

He returned late on Oct. 29 to the ex-girlfriend's residence, where he allegedly confronted her at the back door and brandished a large-caliber revolver before fleeing the scene, police said.

Officers called Smith and he agreed to meet detectives at the department for questioning, where police said he admitted to the vehicle vandalism and, subsequently, was arrested. The knife used to puncture the tires was recovered from Smith’s vehicle, the agency said.

The department today at approximately 8 a.m. served a search warrant for firearms at the suspect's home where he resides with several people on a large rural property on the 3000 block of Eastman Lane outside Petaluma city limits. The search warrant service was conducted without incident, other property residents cooperated and none were arrested, police said.

During the search, police said they recovered from Smith's room the revolver from the Oct. 29 incident, along with an assault weapon, an AK-47 rifle with high capacity, 30-round magazine -- both loaded.

The revolver was reported stolen in 2012 from Lake County. Several other older rifles and shotguns belonging to Smith also were seized, police said.
