Residents Remember Longtime Boy Scout Leader

Marion Sarmiento died of a heart attack this past Wednesday.

 

Marion Sarmiento, 70, a local Boy Scout troop leader, died of a heart attack on Wednesday, June 11. Sarmiento was a member of the Wappo Chapter and Troop, Crew 468 and Pack 18 of the South Gate Boy Scouts.

His unexpected death has led some to remember his cheerful nature.

 “I’ve spent all day trying to think of how to describe him,” said Bill De Witt, who served with him as a fellow scout leader. “He was cheerful and had a hint of laughter in his eyes, always.”

Sarmiento was known for his desire to inspire scouts and colleagues. Teaching them to strive for greatness, while instilling confidence.

“He always strived to show us the right way with many situations,” said Nicky Martinez, Wappo Chapter Chief, in a statement. “There is no doubt many will miss you for the great person you were, for the many things you did and said.”

Sarmiento served as a mentor in his 40 years of service to the Boy Scouts. Leading some of the very people he taught to express their immense grief.

“He was a mentor and adviser to me, and [to] countless others,” wrote Daniel Wisley on Facebook. “He impacted so many lives over his 40 [plus] years in Scouting, including my own.”
